Venice at a glance.
When I was invited to be part of this trip to Italy, I had decided to stay one more day in Venice just to see the city.
The first day was raining… the kind of rain you don’t want especially when you are on holidays…. and it was heavy raining the whole Saturday.
After the Biennale, I had to check-in at the hotel, which by the way was to the other end of the city, close to the train station. So I had the chance to have a small taste of what Venice is all about, even though under this heavy rain. Well…
I have a small embracing confession to make – I never dreamed of visiting the city of Venice. I was convinced that it was a lovers-dream destination of a previous generation. I never dreamed of a gondola ride in Venice – I was never keen of the Venetian masks and everything else that Venice offered.. well i thought I had it.. I lived in Rome when I was a student of Architecture so i never though that besides the Biennale I was missing something.
I am so glad Venice proved me wrong immediately! Every corner, every angle of the city was simply irresistibly attractive!
It’s also geographically unique. It’s small and compact: There are 118 submerged islands, 400 foot bridges and 170 boat canals with only one main road and two proper side streets. There are endless small alleys and narrow roads and it’s Architecture is of high standard everywhere you look. I just wanted to see everything!
When i arrived at the hotel (around 6 pm) all my clothes were wet and I was so tired, I took a warm bath, rested for an hour, and went out again. With the people from our group that stayed in Venice (but in various parts of the city), we had arranged drinks to a place next to famous Ponte Rialto.
And Venice by night was dreamy! (Even though it hadn’t stopped raining at all!)
The next day, the sky was clear blue and the sun was shinning. Lucky me, I could see sunny Venice even for just some hours until i reach the airport. There are no words to describe the charm of this city under the clear and sunny sky. Venice is full of wonderful lagoons, small islands and canals with scenic locations. I sat and had my last Venetian coffee in one of these scenic canals, overlooking the most romantic city on the planet.
It might sound cliché but hey it’s true: Venice is like nowhere else on earth!
